Demons - FilkContinental 2005 report

| This was the shortest Con ever... time isn't what it was when I was younger… There were so many people I didn't find the time to talk to properly; and many people I'd have enjoyed to hear more of.
One great thing this year was that the space in the castle was being used most efficiently, people playing in the small bays of the stair cases – more, more, more Urban Tapestry than only in the concerts!!! Since I didn't check the list of participants in advance it was such a happy surprise to see callylevy and Marilisa again – I haven't been to a British Con for years… And listen to them again, of course! And it was so good to meet with smallship1 again, and highstone, and hrrunka, and… Argh! *positive overload* I'm so looking forward to February. I'll definitely be at the British Convention. To see you all again and those who couldn't come this year! And meeting with ohiblather, Jodi and allisona of Urban Tapestry – you guys weren't only (only?) terrific GoHs but I also loved the time we could spend together, personally!
There was a short cameo appearance of salika, aprost and their baby daughter Lea – unfortunately really, really, really short. The time, not the baby, who is the youngest of the latest batch of Filk babies but kind of the tallest.
meritmaat's daughter Emily bit off her mother's nose in the dead elk circle but otherwise proved filk compatible.
Joe's filceolaire daughter Emily pola_bear (same names apparently lead to the old habit of indicating the father's name…) was an apt student to teach strange stuff to. UT were really eager to learn German phrases – now at least they know how to get to the station and what a squirrel is! After the squirrel episode the_magician didn't believe that "peach" indeed is "Pfirsich" so he ended up eating lubricant ("Gleitcreme") for breakfast. This is the strangest development: in the early years we did almost only English songs because we tried to become one community. ("Sorry, but the next song will be in German…") Slowly we approached a 1:1 ratio of English and German songs. And now there are more and more languages coming in and the native English speakers do stuff in German – this is so amazing!!!
Music wise: Yay to Urban Tapestry! They rule! And it's so awesome to listen to songs like "The Lady" or "Starsoul" or "Jalapeno Man" sung in the original version – I don't know how often I sang them myself… Summer and Fall (Eva and Crystal) never cease to surprise, amaze and overwhelm. I'm so sorry I got a giggle attack in the circle when they played "Stimmen im Wind" – but we had spent about an hour the day before, standing in the (very, very misty!) courtyard, filking that song on "when Ina and I fetched some beer".
We saw quite a lot of Franklin this year since the committee appeared as "Rocky-Horror-Picture-Show" cast (:o) and he had to wear a "Sailor Moon" costume because on last year's auction someone paid a lot of money for him to do this… I'm sure there'll be pictures online, soon. Please?!
One other grand thing was being on the rooms or in the courtyard and talking. There should be much more time in one weekend, did I mention that earlier?! And it's ridiculous. Because we could have that more often. ina and sibylle - let's come together more often in between conventions, that would be great, and we live rather nearby…!
Rafael and I agreed that "Gib uns Tiernamen" has to go on stage again next year – I already applied for a Spot on the application sheet. Now the name is even more appropriate – he's the chipmunk, I'm now the squirrel… Also shannachie and I have been planning for months to do a project together, featuring German medieval / folk songs – let's focus on having something to present next year!
My CD sold amazingly well. We'll have to calculate it but my guess is that we're even now. Dear customers, I love you dearly and hope you'll enjoy the product. And I hope that I didn't misspell your name as I did in at least one case. How embarrassing…
Now I'm home and tired and glad that it's our National Holiday so I can go to bed now. Or something. Listen to my UT CD. Just not sit anymore. Because a convention is really bad for your behind. | add something > |
| | Hello! What is the the best way for me to get your CD? Do you still have some left? Will filk dealers in the U.S. be getting it? | | (Reply) (Thread) |
| Oh! I thought to talk to the Sands in February when I get to the British Filk Convention - but if you want it sooner I could of course just ship it to you...?! The price is 12 Euros - and I know that payment is tricky and expensive so I'd suggest the easiest way is to find some German with a paypal account (I don't have one...) to help me out. I'll ask around! And you just made my day with asking for the CD, thanks!!! :o) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

| | I have a paypal account and could help you out, but I can only except money that is already in the other's account and not made via credit card. | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| | The easy way - email me your account info to rkoerte at g mail and I'll pay for it & postage by money transfer from my german account as a thank you to Joey for giving me his worldcon membership! :) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| | I definitely enjoyed your other (first?) CD I got from you long ago in 2000, so I'm looking forward to this one! | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| Yes, that was the first! And I don't like it that much any more because I improved and now I have the perfect producer. Actually I'm thinking of re-recording those old songs again... :o) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| Well, I still like it. And I think what makes it special is the lovely CD packaging. I'm sure it was a lot of work.
Have your "old" songs changed much since you first recorded them? I mean the melodies and lyrics. | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| Actually I haven't done those old songs a lot recently - but the ideas and possibilities to arrange them for a CD have increased. One song of the old CD is also on the new one because I wanted to yield its full potential (To Become Bold -"Whatever may be..."). And my singing technique is much better, my voice sounds better and my guitar playing has also improved. (Yay me. That doesn't sound very modest. But I just say "better", not "awesome". :o) I seem to be not the only one who feels like this about former publications - I think we always strive to do better and if we feel that our faculties grew we want to re-do the stuff. Wow. A sentence with "faculties" and "stuff" in it... :o) I don't change lyrics, though. The songs are just as I wrote them, including bad English and all. Do you change lyrics with the time?
I just got another idea: You could attend to the British Filk Con in Feb, that's the easiest solution. :o))))) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| I rarely change lyrics over time, but I find the melody moves around. I do know some people who will not change the lyrics at all. Others will make changes if they feel the song is improved with them.
New arrangements can be fun and interesting!
As for your other idea: I think it's a good one! However, I don't expect to be able to attend in 2006. Maybe in 2008 or so. Maybe. | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

| 2007 will be a 4-days-con (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday; people leaving Tuesday morning) because Tuesday is our National Holiday and it will be the 10th FilkContinental! Actually it's already sold out but in a few months I bet there'll be more memberships available, as soon as the first people start to cancle or forget to pay. Just look at Debbie's food pictures! *lure, lure* :o))) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| I'm a paypal now!!! So if you send me 16 Euros (12 Euros for the CD, 4 Euros for packaging and shipping) I'll send you the CD!!! :o) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| | The 'Demons' CD was especially welcome on the return journey - it being my in-flight entertainment, (if that's the word), on the Eurostar. Of course, as I was listening on headphones from the Discman(tm), my fellow passengers had no context for the audible reactions to each number. Got the maximum number of apprehensive head-turns as I laughed out loud to the Pirate Song when passing through the Channel tunnel... | | (Reply) (Thread) |
| Has anyone a baby I can dangle out of a window? Oh, by dose...! ;o) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| | Cor, I wonder, if I write a good review for the new Kate Bush album, will she send a similar reply?? | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| Is it already out?! Is it already out?! I heard the new song as a preview on the radio...! :o)) Try it, I'd say...! | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

| I SO like the album picture!!! It's stones in the water with their reflections - but it looks like a track of soundwaves on the computer!!! Did you catch an audio-glimpse of "King of the Mountains"? It's very promising (not the intensity of "Wuthering Heights", though...) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

highstone | | Subject: | Re: The KB album | | Link: | (Link) | | Time: | 2005-10-07 05:25 pm (UTC) |
|
| Yes, a suitably poetic double meaning to the image I reckon... Not heard the audio glipse yet, my PCs at work and home are, so far, mute. Reckon I'll just have to restrain myself until the release date...
Certainly it would be hard to duplicate the impact of 'Wuthering Heights' - I distinctly recall the impression it made on me in 1978, (yes I am that old). Come to think of it, Kate and myself *are* the same age, more or less! | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

|
| I was just lucky that I heard it on the radio on my way back home from work... I'll listen to several tracks in some record shop and then will decide if I buy it.
Still need to keep my money together and since I have the plan to attend to the British Con in February... Also I'm toying the thought of going by car some days earlier, do some sightseeing in Cambridge (never been there) and spend the remainders of my municipal prowess on the contents of W.H.Smith and Boots... So - by the way: In your experience which route is better? Calais-Dover or Oostende-Dover? And what did you prefer: ferry or tunnel, and why? :o)) Ah, and 1978! Those were the days. Wild. My memories are VERY vague. I drank a lot, several bottles each day, then... ;o) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

| Know what you mean about keeping money together, currently resisting the temptation to buy CDs of 'Wise Guys' - an acapella group I have just been made aware of. Cambridge sounds a logical choice to visit before 1812Tone - a few filking chums are resident there, such as Rhodri and Deborah, who knows they might be willing to act as native guides?? Ferry routes, hmmm...well I would say Harwich would be a better port to head for than Dover - much nearer to Cambridge and the Con location, plus you don't have to negotiate London. I know vehicle ferries go to Harwich from the Hook of Holland, not so sure about Ostend to Harwich though... Now although my first (and very memorable) visit to Germany was via the Dover-Ostend ferry, these days I'm always going via the tunnel. Basically, I am a lazy so-and-so who prefers to sit back in a comfy seat and not be bothered with driving - so it's the train for me! | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

|
| Would you understand the "Wise Guys"?! Ever heard Anke do their fish song "Flundern gibt es immer wieder"? :o) Thanks for the tip with Harwich! I'll ask in a travel agency for the best route - because my Eichhoernchen route planner reticently sends me to Calais, whatever I feed it. And I'll definitely ask if somebody would like to accompany me around Cambridge. I like driving my car; though I can still remember that Belgium is kind of a challenge with all the Belgic car drivers around... :o))) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

| Well, I was fortunate enough to have my Koeln fan friend, Bettina, giving a gloss to each number as it came up. Reckon it's more motivation to get more fluent in Deutsch... What really impressed me with Wise Guys was their great acapella technique, acapella always being of interest to such NMC folk as myself. It seems Die Prinzen have gone over to using instruments lately, so right now 'Wise Guys' rule in the acapella stakes. Do ask Deborah or Rhodri about being guides to Cambridge, you can often catch Deb (as Zeborah) over on the Filkhaven chat room. | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

| Hello. Good day Who listens to what music? I Love songs Justin Timberlake and Paris Hilton | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| Hä? Ich lese die Worte aber der Sinn geht an mir vorbei... Nochmal, bitte! :o) | | (Reply) (Thread) |
| So great to be able to meet you! Und yay, I habe your CD! Ich habe already loaded it onto my iPod so ich can hore to it everywhere ich gehe. Jodi was practising her neue squirrel wort on the plane, by the way. Und ich really enjoyed hearing you sing, as well...wow, du habe a fantastisch voice!
And ja, ich know my mishmash of Deutsch und Englisch is an abomination to both languages, aber ich figure I might gradually improve over zeit. If ich don't drive everyone nuts first, of course.
Debbie | | (Reply) (Thread) |
| Yay!!! That's a fantastic way of language acquisition, I never thought about it - just to insert more and more words!!! We Germans should do more German journal entries so you can practise some... :o))) But it's dangerous to be driven nuts - that makes you Eichhornchen food... :o( ;o) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| And because I was laughing so hard about your comment I even forgot to tell you how exhilarated I am that you like the CD!!! But I realised a big catch: I don't have songs to sing in a car, to really entertain people - that's something I have to change. Note to self: Plan for future: make funny car songs! | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

| | What do you mean - Dancer in the Dark is not good enough for singing along in the car?? Christine, you've been on heavy rotation in my car ever since early september (ever since Harry discoverd he indeed still had a cassette! *grin*)! Those are perfect sing-along-car-songs! Bam-baa Ba-ba-bam! :-)) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| The heavy rotation thing explains some nausea and sickness... :o))) Thanks! And have I ever said thanks for the "bambam bababam" chanting whenever I sang it? This is an awkward but exhilarating experience and also must have been very strange for all the other people who didn't know the CD version yet... :o) | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |

| *grin* Considering that people did not really know what they were actually doing quite a few joined in! :-) I always knew this CD would quickly ascend to my "Most-favorite-CD Walhalla" *grins*. Had to wait waaaaaaayyyyyyyy to long for it! :-) Und ich denke immer wieder - meine Güte: das alles steckt in Christine?? WOW! Bin immer wieder aufs neue beeindruckt. Meeeehr! Zugabe! *lach* | | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
